Scattered ceramics
Description
This
fascination with economics continues this year (much like the
recession) in the presentation of a new tea set, the ‘scattered
service’. The focus here is again on hard work. Hence the cups that
have been scattered across a work desk or table as a result of late
night frantic working, where the remnants of plenty of coffee and tea
drinking has resulted in toppled over cups, milk jugs and sugar bowls.
At the point of calm, the cups remain quietly balanced and static on
their rim edges and sides. An unlikely starting point, but this series
of cups, jug and bowl creates a rhythmic and poetic tray setting.
In the words of the New York Times these are ‘plain white teacups that
were tipped over and strewn along a shelf, like the detritus from a
long day in bankruptcy court. These teacups look like they’ve been
knocked over. They suggest a new way to set your table that
acknowledges social conflict and personal dysfunction. But when it’s
time to pass around the teapot each cup can stand up and be useful.’
